Natural Treatment For Sleep Apnea

By Debra Foster

Because it is important to sleep for about 6-9 hours, all efforts to stop whatever that can prevent this is welcome. One of the things that can prevent it is sleep apnea. The good news is that there are some natural ways of dealing with this disorder so surgery is not the only cure. All the noninvasive treatment for sleep apnea do not cost much and they work so well. It is important to know them so that you can be a source of joy to others who have this problem.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a famous cure for this disorder. This procedure requires the wearing of a mask with a tube to a machine. The machine sends air continuously through the tube to the person's airways. Since this is done with some pressure, the person using it will not have any cessation in breathing.

However, some people are not comfortable with the CPAP mask. For them, other methods can be used and that includes positional therapy. Since this disorder normally results when a person sleeps in a supine position, making sure that the person affected sleep by the side can stop the problem. This can be achieved by using a device that can hold the waist or back.

Combining other treatment procedures and not quitting cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption will make all efforts futile. Cigarette and alcohol are bad for this because they make the airway muscles relax thereby making snoring to be very possible. Smoke from cigarette even worsens it as it causes an inflammation of the airways.

Apart from the cigarette, smoke from anywhere can cause sleep apnea. This means that people whose vocation exposes them to smoke have got to do a lot of wearing of nose masks and shielding the smoke that comes from their furnace. Such people include caterers and firefighters.

You can also prevent this by eating well. When your feeding is targeted at losing weight, you will hardly have problems with sleep apnea. The result is more effective when feeding right is combined with doing some exercise as the two are measures of combating obesity. This is obviously the most cost-effective way of achieving this since it also reduces your consumption level.

Consuming antioxidant supplements also helps to solve the problems caused by sleep apnea. Antioxidants are recommended because oxidative stress is the primary factor behind this problem. Oxidative stress is bound to occur when free radicals are high in the blood. The antioxidants reduce the level of free radicals, reduces oxidative stress and makes the individual enjoy sleep. Increased oxidative stress makes it difficult for the blood vessels to contract and relax. Another way of expressing this is endothelial dysfunction. By taking Vitamin E and beta-carotene, oxidative stress can be minimized.

The use of vitamin D is also helpful. People who suffered from this were found to have low levels of vitamin D when tested. Vitamin D is important in preventing this because it helps in regulating insulin and prevents inflammation that results from insulin resistance.
