Advantages And Disadvantages Of A Colonoscopy

By Joshua Long

Colonoscopy is the process of doing an endoscopic examination in a large bowel or small bowel with the use of the CCD camera or fiber optic camera being inserted into the flexible tube that is passed into the anus. The process provides visual diagnosis and will grant the opportunity of biopsy or the removal of the suspected lesions of colorectal cancer. The polyps are also removed by the process and will then be studied if these can be precancerous or not.

Colonoscopies are considered to be one of the common procedures in which people often hear, but few of them only have experienced it. Most people generally think that this process may only be applied for older or middle aged people. However, a colonoscopy Conway AR is so much useful in order to determine the risks of colon cancer compared to only using the ordinary checkup.

The pros of colonoscopy. The most common benefit of this is the detection and prevention for having a colon cancer and some other medical conditions such as inflammatory bowel diseases or ulcers. There may other procedures that can be used for testing these issues but colonoscopy is considered to be the best procedure. Through this, the doctor will be allowed on looking some potential problems in the area.

Most people are required on having this procedure and most of them are considering as an uncomfortable procedure, and thus, sedation process is performed to them. Through this, a doctor will be allowed to operate freely the camera without the need to think if the patient is feeling any pain or discomfort. Additionally, there are already modern technologies designed for the purpose as surgical tool and camera. Through this, a camera is used by doctors for taking samples of tissues. Biopsies may also be done.

The disadvantages of colonoscopy. The major drawbacks include being invasive. It means that a doctor may be allowed on going to the sensitive parts so diagnosis is provided. Generally, the doctors would just prefer to just go to a body to perform a surgery or to fix an issue that is diagnosed already.

This procedure can catch some of the early signs of a particular cancer, however, there are some other procedures also which are similar to this that provide some tests and also have lesser risks. One example is virtual colonoscopies, a CT scan for the colon for detecting anomalies. With this procedure, sedation and camera insertion are not required. Biopsies also are not performed and as well as tissue sample collection which makes it safer.

Sedation may be considered as risky since all people may not have the same reaction for use of some chemicals. So these chemicals may lead to complications for some patients. Even death may also become a result due to sedation.

Another risk of this is having the possibility of an excessive bleeding or infection because of getting the tissue samples or biopsies. Even if the process is not frequently done, this may still be dangerous, most especially to elder people. A strict diet regiment may be needed prior to the process, putting stress to a patient.

In conclusion, taking some preventive measures may help in catching some potential problems. One of this is colonoscopy and though it may have some drawbacks, it can still help. Virtual colonoscopies are also recommended because these would still provide similar results.
