A Guide To Preventing Food Allergies In Children

By Sharon Thompson

Many children suffer from food allergies and they differ in seriousness. Some are mild while other reactions are life threatening. Examples of the foods that are commonly known for causing allergies include milk, eggs, peanuts, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, soy and wheat. To date, the cause of food allergies and the reasons as to why they are on the rise have not been identified. Nevertheless, researchers state that parents can take some actions in order to curb them. Below are some of the important steps towards preventing food allergies in children.

You can prevent food allergies in minors by maintaining a healthy maternal diet. The nutrition of children begins before birth. The foods that you eat when pregnant will have a significant effect on the health of your child. It is essential to ensure that you follow a balanced diet consisting of healthy foods like lean meat, dairy products, fruits, whole grains and vegetables.

A study done in 2011 in Finland suggested that if women who are prone to type 1 diabetes consumed more milk from cows during pregnancy, there was a lower incidence of their kids suffering from a milk allergy. In a study done in Denmark in 2012, a high consumption of tree nuts and peanuts during pregnancy was linked to a reduction of asthma and nut allergies in kids. It is also important to take prenatal supplements and vitamins when pregnant to prevent birth defects and other health issues in babies.

Parents should also be careful when weaning their babies. They should try to avoid introducing solid foods until their infants are about four or six months old. It is also wise for them to introduce new foods one at a time like every 2 to 3 days so that they can note any reactions.

Another way to prevent allergies in kids is to prepare meals well. Note that plants contain natural toxins such as phytic acid to protect themselves against predators. When children eat foods that have not been prepared properly to denature the natural toxins, inflammation occurs in the body and reduces nutrient absorption. You can soak or sprout grains, nuts, legumes and seeds prior to cooking to ensure that your child gets the most from these foods.

Another way to prevent allergies is ensuring that inflammation is kept low. You should ensure that the foods your child eats contain anti inflammatory elements. It is wise to incorporate fermented foods and others that health the gut into his or her diet to improve digestion. Incorporating nutrient rich food into the diet is also wise because it strengthens the immune system.

You should also introduce foods that heal the gut to the diet of a child early. In these modern times, many things damage the gut. They include antibiotics, pollution, pesticides and heavy metals. These contaminants reduce the number of beneficial bacteria in the gut, which affects immune function. Examples of gut healing foods are bone soup and fermented foods. These foods rectify the damage that occurs to the gut.

You can also prevent food allergies by ensuring that your child drinks clean water daily. Water acts as a detoxifier when it is filtered and chemical free. If kids drink unfiltered water, their bodies are forced to work harder to detoxify. Eliminating indoor pollution from your home is also essential.
